“Dr. Trego was amazing. She took a lot of time to explain tongue and lip ties to us and showed us our sons and what we’re looking at. Before treatment she asked if she could pray for our little boy, his treatment, and symptoms. It meant so much to us. She also called that evening to check on our boy. Cannot recommend them enough!”

“I can’t say enough good things about Alabama Tongue-Tie Center. As a first time mom, I went in to the appointment extremely anxious and within minutes of meeting Dr. Trego I was put completely at ease. The procedure lasted no more than 5 minutes and I felt so educated upon leaving on what to do for my daughter’s after-care. Dr. Trego and the whole team were extremely professional, caring, and sweet. We drove a good ways to come here, and I don’t regret it at all. These people are the best in the business.”

“Dr Baxter was wonderful. Our 7 week old needed a tongue and lip tie treated. He was very thorough and took time to explain everything to us. He provided us with information for follow ups that will continue helping our symptoms improve. He took the time to pray with us before her procedure, which was very important and reassuring to our family that we were in great hands. He was also very gentle while handling our baby and was good at calming her down when she was upset. May the Lord continue to bless Dr. Baxter and his practice as he continues to help these sweet babies. I would highly recommend him to anyone needing treatment for ties.”

bottle feeding baby tongue tie

What does a tongue-tie have to do with it?

Gas and colic are common in babies, often due to underlying issues—about 1 in 4 have a tongue-tie or lip-tie that makes breastfeeding or bottle-feeding difficult, resulting in a poor latch. This can cause babies to swallow air, leading to more gas and discomfort.

Many parents hear, “It will get better over time,” and try quick fixes like gas drops, gripe water, formula changes, or nipple shields—anything for relief. But these only mask symptoms without addressing the root problem. Releasing a tongue-tie can solve the issue for good. A simple 15-second laser procedure with numbing jelly can improve feeding the same day.

Recognizing a tongue-tie early can ease your baby’s discomfort and support effective feeding. If you’ve tried everything for your colicky, gassy, spitting-up baby, contact Dr. Baxter and Dr. Trego at the Alabama Tongue-Tie Center. We’d be honored to help.

Maybe you’ve noticed these baby tongue-tie symptoms.

Tongue-tie (Ankyloglossia) is a birth condition that limits tongue movement due to a short, thick, or tight band of tissue (lingual frenulum) tethering the tongue’s tip to the mouth floor. This can cause breastfeeding challenges and may contribute to gassiness and colic in babies. Tongue-ties can be subtle and hard to detect, leading to many undiagnosed cases. Click here for the complete symptom list. If your baby has more than a few of these items, then a consultation would be worthwhile.

Mother’s Symptoms

  • Painful nursing
  • Creased or flattened nipples
  • Blistered or cut nipples
  • Incomplete breast drainage
  • Plugged ducts or mastitis
  • Inability to nurse without using a nipple shield
  • Decreasing milk supply

Baby’s Symptoms

  • Poor latch
  • Poor weight gain
  • Reflux or frequent spitting up
  • Frequent gassiness and fussiness
  • Clicking or smacking noises when eating
  • Dribbling milk out of mouth
  • Frustration when eating
  • Inability to hold a pacifier
  • Prolonged nursing or bottle-feeding sessions

How to treat your baby’s tongue-tie.

Addressing tongue-tie early is crucial. If left untreated, it can lead to long-term speech, sleep, breathing, feeding, and dental health issues. These problems can even persist into adulthood, causing sleep disturbances, headaches, neck and shoulder pain, and speech difficulties.

To determine if your baby’s feeding challenges—frustration at the breast or bottle, constant hunger, gassiness, spitting up, or poor weight gain—are due to a tongue-tie, we start with a thorough history and detailed examination. If a tongue-tie is confirmed, we use a precise CO2 laser to release the restricted tissue under the tongue or lip in just 10-15 seconds per area, resulting in minimal bleeding. Babies can feed immediately afterward, and many moms notice immediate improvements, such as a deeper latch, less clicking and spit-up, and reduced nursing pain. To prevent regrowth, we guide parents through post-procedure stretches.
