What does a tongue-tie have to do with it?

Tongue-tie (Ankyloglossia) is a birth condition that limits tongue movement due to a short, thick, or tight band of tissue (lingual frenulum) tethering the tongue’s tip to the mouth floor. How to treat your baby’s tongue-tie.

Addressing tongue-tie early is crucial. If left untreated, it can lead to long-term speech, sleep, breathing, feeding, and dental health issues. These problems can even persist into adulthood, causing sleep disturbances, headaches, neck and shoulder pain, and speech difficulties.

To determine if your baby’s feeding challenges—frustration at the breast or bottle, constant hunger, gassiness, spitting up, or poor weight gain—are due to a tongue-tie, we start with a thorough history and detailed examination. If a tongue-tie is confirmed, we use a precise CO2 laser to release the restricted tissue under the tongue or lip in just 10-15 seconds per area, resulting in minimal bleeding. Babies can feed immediately afterward, and many moms notice immediate improvements, such as a deeper latch, less clicking and spit-up, and reduced nursing pain. To prevent regrowth, we guide parents through post-procedure stretches.
